Ding Dong! The Rural Schools Are Gone
Tales of bygone days…1 room, 40 students, 8 grades, 1 teacher
You may be too young to remember attending a ‘one-room schoolhouse’, but someone in your family probably passed down the tales of your grandparent’s growing up in these schools.
Children really did walk through knee-high snow to get to school. Frost caked the windows. The rooms were cold enough to see your breath and put a chill clear to one’s bones. Yet, these schools helped mold the children of early pioneers and multilingual immigrants into literate and patriotic citizens of a new nation.
Walk through the countryside to school with us. Make rural schools come alive again as we share stories of those early years.
